A Local Hot Pot Boiling Over With Creativity


On the first Sunday of every month, photographers, musicians, writers and sculptors gather like an eclectic tribe in southwest Detroit. Sneakily tucked above the Mexicantown Bakery, these creatives congregate to nourish not only their bodies, but also their minds and spirits.

Started a mere four months ago by two friends, Kate Daughdrill and Jessica Hernandez, SOUP, in its simplest form, can be described as "a monthly dinner funding micro-grants for creative projects." Hernandez explains: "Coming from a Cuban and Mexican background, and Kate (from) a Greek background, I think we both can agree that food is what brings people together. Throughout my life, meals have always been the reason that everyone drops what they're doing for a moment in their day." So for one night out of the month, inspired young Metro Detroiters drop the monotony of everyday life, pick up a spoon and dip into conversation. But SOUP isn't just about the meal ...
